Lucile Joan Lloyd Hofheins 1925-2014

Grandma Hofheins was born 10 May 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She died 31 Mar. 2014.  And today, April 7th was her funeral.  It was a really beautiful day!

Jamie does great work on displays.  Good to know for the future!

She made dolls of all her daughters', granddaughters' wedding dresses, making replicas of each.  She made one for Jamie, also.

Obituary for Joan Lloyd Hofheins

 Joan Lloyd Hofheins concluded her life peacefully at home on Monday, March 31, 2014. She was born on May 10, 1925 to Lucile Ashton and Henry Harries Lloyd, the first of seven children. Her childhood was spent in Salt Lake City, Utah on Capitol Hill. She attended public school in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating from West High School in 1942. Joan loved her childhood growing up with cousins in her neighborhood, aunts and uncles and grandparents. She loved retreating with the Lloyd and Ashton clan to Little Cottonwood every summer where they enjoyed the family cabins built by her Father and Grandfather Ashton. As a child she overcame pneumonia and always considered her life a gift, never taking it for granted. She continued her education at the University of Utah where she dated and fell in love with Cloyd C. Hofheins her high school sweetheart. She received a Baccalaureate degree in Home Economics with a minor in Music. Joan was a skilled, talented and creative seamstress with an emphasis in dressmaking and in her later years replicated on miniature porcelain dolls all her childrens’ and granddaughters’ wedding dresses.

Joan and Cloyd centered their life around their ten children: Steven Lloyd Hofheins (deceased), Christine Donaldson (John), Bryan Hofheins (Arden), Carolyn Howard (Fred), Timothy Hofheins (Ruthanne), Leonard Hofheins (Debbie), Lucile Anderson, Gordon Hofheins (Becca), Clarence Hofheins (Kristyn), and Nathan Hofheins (Lisa).

Mixing music with sports, they sang, performed musical instruments and cheered at ballgames. Joan and Cloyd were founders of the Provo Tackle Football League in 1984, and they organized the Central Utah Football Conference in 1988. Supporting her sons in scouting, she was one of few women to ever receive the Silver Beaver Award. She served for over twenty-five years as a Blazer Leader preparing many young men to receive their Eagle award. She loved the song “High Hopes” and instilled such hope in all she served! She served three fulltime missions with Cloyd in Philippines/Manila, LDS Social Services, Provo, Utah and Brazil/Sao Paulo Mission. For ten years prior and up to one week before her passing, she taught free piano lessons to children in her neighborhood.

A memorial “Family Music Night” for all her past and present piano students will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, in the Oak Hills 9th Ward Hillside Chapel, 1960 North 1500 East, Provo, Utah. All are welcome!

The neighborhood children loved to run to her front door and surprise her every day with their gleeful smiles and hands stretched out for candy and a hug. Joan loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all 135 plus! She loved Christmas celebrations and any other excuse or holiday to gather her children. The great-grandchildren will miss the slide down her inside stairway and balloons in the mail on their birthday. She loved her brothers and sisters and is survived by Harries and Audrey Lloyd, Earl and Naoma Lloyd, Wayne and Geniel Lloyd, Carolee and Brent Dayton, Ben and Joan Lloyd, and Susan and Jon Leatham.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Oak Hills 9th Ward Hillside Chapel, 1960 North 1500 East, Provo, Utah. Friends and family may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Sunday, April 6, from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Monday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
